In this tutorial i'll show you how to make an orb icon. There are loads of orb tutorials out there, but this orb looks a little different ( and better in my oppinion :D ).
Step 1
Start out by taking the circular marquee tool and drawing a small size circle like the one below.

Again with the circular marquee tool draw out a shape similar to the one shown on the image below. Note ive zoomed in.
Step 3
Now make your foreground colour white, make a new layer, and take the gradient tool (shown in the first image below).
With the gradient tool, hold shift and draw a line top to bottom over your selected marquee (shown in the second image). Then release the mouse button This will apply a gradient inside the area you selected in step 2.

Step 4
Duplicate the white gradient layer you just applied in step 3, press CTRL + T, right click and choose flip vertically and move it to the bottom of your circle. Select the effects button and add a black color overlay.

Step 5
Now we need to lower the opacity to something around 22%. Your just trying to make the bottom part of the circle look darker than the top!
Step 6
Now for the shadow. Create a new layer behind the first layer you made for the circle and draw out a shape with the circular marquee tool as shown below.
Step 7
Fill it with black and add go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Play with the level until you are happy with the blur. Play with the opacity until it suits a shadow and you should have something like below.
